Pulses Farming: Nutritional Powerhouses

Pulses like chickpeas, lentils, pigeon peas, and green gram are essential protein-rich crops in Indian diets. They are grown in both Kharif (July–August) and Rabi (October–November) seasons, depending on the variety and region. Pulses thrive in warm climates with moderate rainfall and grow best in well-drained sandy or clay loam soils.

Popular pulse varieties include Pusa 256 (chickpeas), T-9 (black gram), and Arhar 1 (pigeon peas). Pulses are highly sustainable as they fix nitrogen in the soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers.

The crop matures within 90–120 days, making it a quick and profitable farming option. Pulses require minimal water and are harvested when the pods are dry. Average yields vary between 8–10 quintals per acre, depending on the variety and care.
