Bajra Farming: A Crop for Marginal Lands

Bajra, or pearl millet, is a hardy cereal crop that thrives in hot and arid climates. It is an excellent choice for regions with low rainfall (30–50 cm) and poor soils. Bajra is primarily grown during the Kharif season (June–July) and harvested in September–October.

Sandy or light loamy soils are ideal for bajra cultivation. High-yielding varieties include HHB 67, ICMB 155, and Pusa 23. With proper spacing and timely weeding, bajra can mature within 70–90 days, making it one of the fastest-growing cereals.

The average yield of bajra is 10–12 quintals per acre, and it is harvested when the grains turn hard and dry. Bajra is valued for its resilience and its ability to improve soil health through crop rotation.
